Henri...Loneliness is the negative side of solitude. Henri Nouwen wrote about this, and I agree with him. That 'empty' thing we experience, even if we fill our lives with people and the gadgets of mammon, is that inner place where God is that longs for our attention. Perhaps it is even God Himself, longing for us to turn in and be with Him Who is Immanuel, 'God With Us'. Loneliness can be seen as a call, even the call of God saying to us, "Be still, and come away with Me; come here, inside, where I Am, waiting for you. It's so easy to get all wrapped up in the loneliness itself and not recognize it for what it is-a light on the dashboard saying "be a good friend to someone else!! initiate! get out of this funk!" <br /><br />Although it would be nice, we can't rely on other people to always take the first step.
